Effect of cortisone on the permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier to fluorescein.

چکیده
THE unsatisfactory state of our knowledge regarding the effect of cortisone on capillary permeability has been discussed in a previous paper (Duke-Elder and Ashton, 1951). It was there noted that Leopold and others (1951), injecting fluorescein intravenously in rabbits and estimating its concentration in the aqueous humour, observed no delay in the appearance of the dye in the anterior chambers of cortisone-treated animals in comparison with normal controls. From this it may be concluded that cortisone has no effect on the permeability of the capillaries in the normal eye, for molecules of the size of fluorescein. We have confirmed these negative findings by the use of the same method with a slightly modified technique. In our experiments an intravenous injection of 0.05 ml. 10 per cent. fluorescein was given, and cortisone was injected both intramuscularly (0.5 ml. of 25 mg./ml. solution) and subconjunctivally (0.25 ml. of 25 mg./ml. solution). We have extended their investigations to explore the effect of cortisone on the capillary permeability in human eyes in which inflammatory manifestations were present and also in those in which it was absent.

متن کاملEstimation of the permeability of the blood-retinal barrier in normal individuals.
The fluorescein kinetics in the vitreous was simulated with a computer to consider several factors such as permeability of the blood-retinal barrier, outward active transport, plasma fluorescein dynamics, diffusion of fluorescein in the vitreous, and fluorescein leakage from the blood-aqueous barrier. Kinetic vitreous fluorophotometry was performed in normal individuals to estimate the inward a...
متن کاملBlood-ocular barrier permeability in monkeys.
The permeability of the blood-ocular barrier was investigated in five monkeys using vitreous fluorophotometry (VFP). Inward permeability (Pin) of the blood-retinal barrier was calculated by a computer simulation method. Kinetic VFP was performed after intravitreal injection of fluorescein (F) or fluorescein monoglucuronide (FG). The estimated mean value of Pin (x10(-6) cm/min) was 4.8 (SD 1.2)....
متن کاملThe continuous and quantitative observation of permeability changes of the blood-aqueous barrier in allergic inflammation of the eye.
Permeability changes of the blood-aqueous barrier were studied in the eyes of rabbits subjected to immunologic inflammation. The changes were investigated by slit-lamp microphotometers. The leakage of fluorescein-labeled rabbit serum albumin into the anterior chamber was observed in eyes inflamed by reverse passive Arthus reactions. The permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier changed in bipha...
متن کاملEffect of Nesfatin-1 on Permeability of Blood Brain Barrier, Neurological Score and Brain Edema after Traumatic Brain Injury in Male Rats: A Behavioral and Biochemical Study
Background and purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most complex diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Nesfatin is an 82-amino acid effective polypeptide in CNS. In this study, we investigated the role of nesfatin in neuron protection in the process of diffuse concussion in rats and also its effect on the level of matrix metalloproteinase-9. Materials and methods: In thi...
